Types of Traumatic Brain Injuries

Traumatic brain injuries are classified into three categories: mild, moderate, and severe. Those who experience mild traumatic brain injuries are more likely to recover from their injuries than those who experience moderate to severe traumatic brain injuries. Even so, mild traumatic brain injury victims may experience symptoms throughout the remainder of their lives.

Symptoms of traumatic brain injury vary depending on the severity of the blow, but typically encompass the following:

  • Moderate to severe traumatic brain injuries: Loss of consciousness from minutes to hours, persistent headaches, repeated vomiting, convulsions and seizures, loss of coordination, and more.

While rest and light to moderate activity may improve symptoms of a mild traumatic brain injury, victims of moderate to severe brain injuries often have to undergo more intensive rehabilitative treatment.

Sadly, many severe brain injury victims cannot return to life as it was before their injury, as they often require others to live with them and care for them full-time. It’s also unlikely that severe brain injury victims will ever be able to return to work or earn an income. As such, they can expect to pay hundreds of thousands of dollars in medical treatment and lost wages.

Mild to moderate brain injury victims, on the other hand, have a more positive recovery prognosis. With proper care and treatment, many mild to moderate brain injury victims can expect to return to normal life at some point in the future. However, many of these individuals will continue to experience symptoms of brain injury throughout their lifetime.
