Florida recently passed a law banning texting while driving, making it a secondary offense. While we applaud the state’s efforts to reduce the number of distraction-related accidents, we believe that this legislation might actually be too lenient. A secondary offense means that law enforcement cannot pull drivers offer for texting and driving alone. They must have committed another offense such as running a stop sign, speeding, etc. Also, the fine for texting while driving is just $30.
Distraction doesn’t just come in the form of texting or other cell phone use. Things like eating while driving, changing the music and even talking to other people in the vehicle can constitute “distraction,” yet texting while driving is by far the most dangerous.
